July 1 is Canada Day (or FĂȘte du Canada), their analog of our Independence Day--without all that marching and fighting and tarring and feathering. On July 1, 1867, the Parliament in London passed the British North America Act, uniting the colonies of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick into a Dominion of the British Empire, and the day came to be celebrated as Dominion Day. In 1982 Canada adopted a formal Constitution to replace the Act, making itself fully independent, and the following year the holiday was renamed Canada Day. Sometime this weekend the Canadian city of Windsor, Ontario and the American city of Detroit will hold their annual joint national holidays with what is thought to be the biggest fireworks display in North Ameria, carried out on barges in the river separating the cities. So, Happy Birthday to You, Canada!
