"Little Richard" Penniman died today at 87 years old. He was one of the early stars of Rock-n-Roll when it still was the rebellious music of 1950s teen-agers. Born in Macon, GA in 1932, he broke into show business in 1947, was known in Rhythm and Blues circles in the following years, and then crossed over into the mainstream with his 1955 hit, "Tutti Frutti"; here's a recording from the following year on Alan Freed's TV program:
Little Richard had a huge influence on rock for decades. In 1963 he was asked to join a tour featuring the Rolling Stones, the Everly Brothers, and Bo Didley because it was failing (yep) and saved it. He taught Paul McCartney how to cover his songs. And he ecorded in numerous genres, from R&B to C&W. One of the very last of the founders of R-n-R. RIP
