The NYT published an editorial on Friday calling on the DNC to "investigate" Joe Biden's papers from his Senate career at the University of Delaware. After reading it this morning I wrote this reply:
Honestly, there's something weird about that editorial. It literally makes no sense at all. It's as if they felt the need to make some statement, but couldn't figure out what to say, so in good committee style came up with a high-minded but totally unworkable solution that would satisfy no one. I was only half-joking about the hallucinogens.
Question: Just what hallucinogen was being passed around when the NYT’s Editorial Board wrote this? After the Swiftboat, Birther, and Benghazi/e-mail gaslighting during recent presidential election campaigns, one would think these worthy individuals “whose views are informed by expertise, research, debate and long-standing values,” would recognize the signs of another round. But even if not, surely they could come up with something more realistic than asking investigators to rifle through 2,000 boxes of uncatalogued documents, during a pandemic requiring social distancing, to look for a document that, as Ms. Reade herself has said, would not provide any support for her latest claims. And we can predict with nearly 100 percent certainty that as soon as the appointed investigators report their findings, Republicans and the media (including the Times) would demand that those records be released, providing ample opportunities for all kinds of poutrage mischief. Please just stop, already.
