Some history I'd forgotten, thanks to Michelle Goldberg: "A decade ago, Daryl Johnson, then a senior terrorism analyst at the Department of Homeland Security, wrote a report about the growing danger of right-wing extremism in America. Citing economic dislocation, the election of the first African-American president and fury about immigration, he concluded that 'the threat posed by lone wolves and small terrorist cells is more pronounced than in past years.' When the report leaked, conservative political figures sputtered with outrage, indignant that their ideology was being linked to terrorism. The report warned, correctly, that right-wing radicals would try to recruit disgruntled military veterans, which conservatives saw as a slur on the troops. Homeland Security, cowed, withdrew the document. In May 2009, Johnson’s unit, the domestic terrorism team, was disbanded, and he left government the following year. "Johnson was prescient, though only up to a point. He expected right-wing militancy to escalate throughout Barack Obama’s administration, but to subside if a Republican followed him. Ordinarily, the far-right turns to terrorism when it feels powerless; the Oklahoma City bombing happened during Bill Clinton’s presidency, and all assassinations of abortion providers in the United States have taken place during Democratic administrations. During Republican presidencies, paranoid right-wing demagogy tends to recede, and with it, right-wing violence. But that pattern doesn’t hold when the president himself is a paranoid right-wing demagogue. 'The fact that they’re still operating at a high level during a Republican administration goes against all the trending I’ve seen in 40 years,' Johnson told me. Donald Trump has kept the far right excited and agitated. 'He is basically the fuel that’s been poured onto a fire,' said Johnson." linkSo we were warned that right-wing extremism was on the rise, with violence a likely outcome. Republicans/"conservatives" complained, the warnings were buried, and here we are. A mass murderer who spouts the same conspiracy theories the Republican "President" spouts. A GOP presidential campaign that already is signaling--openly--that it intends to rally Trump's base by inciting more racial division. And escalating hate crimes, but with law enforcement afraid to act: "Dave Gomez, a former F.B.I. supervisor who oversaw terrorism cases, told The Washington Post that the agency hasn’t been as aggressive as it might be against the racist right because of political concerns. 'There’s some reluctance among agents to bring forth an investigation that targets what the president perceives as his base,' he said." Just as Trump was trying to keep a straight face while reading a speech condemning white nationalism written by others, "Cesar Sayoc Jr., the man who sent package bombs to Democrats and journalists he viewed as hostile to Trump, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. In a court filing, his defense lawyers describe how he was radicalized. 'He truly believed wild conspiracy theories he read on the internet, many of which vilified Democrats and spread rumors that Trump supporters were in danger because of them,' they wrote. 'He heard it from the president of the United States, a man with whom he felt he had a deep personal connection' He became a terrorist as a result of taking the president both seriously and literally." This is the abyss into which the United States has sunk. And unseating Trump next year won't fix it. The real problem has been percolating up through the Republican Party since the 1960s, when they made the strategic choice to go after the votes of unreconstructed segregationists. That was the Original Sin of the modern GOP, and it will take a very long time to wash away the stain. Alas, it's mostly innocent bystanders paying the prince, some even with their lives.

Working off that same history of Johnson's report and the GOP's reaction to it, Krugman connects the political dots: "The central story of U.S. politics since the 1970s is the takeover of the Republican Party by economic radicals, determined to slash taxes for the wealthy while undermining the social safety net. With the arguable exception of George H.W. Bush, every Republican president since 1980 has pushed through tax cuts that disproportionately benefited the 1 percent while trying to defund and/or privatize key social programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. This agenda is, however, unpopular. Most voters believe that the rich should pay more, not less, in taxes, and want spending on social programs to rise, not fall. So how do Republicans win elections? By appealing to racial animus. This is such an obvious fact of American political life that you have to be willfully blind not to see it. "For a long time, the G.O.P. establishment was able to keep this game under control. It would campaign using implicit appeals to racial hostility (welfare queens! Willie Horton!) but turn postelection to privatization and tax cuts. But for some reason this bait-and-switch started getting less effective in the 2000s. Maybe it was the reality of America’s growing racial diversity; maybe it was the fact that American society as a whole was becoming less racist, leaving the hard-core racists feeling isolated and frustrated. And the election of our first black president really kicked hatred into overdrive. The result is that there are more and more angry white people out there willing to commit mayhem — and able to do so because those same Republicans have blocked any effective control over sales of assault weapons... "In effect, then, the Republican Party decided that a few massacres were an acceptable price to pay in return for tax cuts. I wish that were hyperbole, but the continuing refusal of G.O.P. figures to criticize Trump even after El Paso shows that it’s the literal truth. So as I said at the beginning, the G.O.P. has become a systematic enabler of terrorism. Why? Follow the money." linkIn just a few sentences he's accurately portrayed decades of American politics at its core.

Why on earth would the gop criticize trump for a few shootings (especially when one was committed by a warren supporter/communist)?? Trump is just trying as hard as he can to defend our border. It is the left which has taken the position to fight him every step of tge way, Even when trump is just trying to execute the law. Its the left that spews hate 99% of the day, calling half of americans racist just cuz they arent happy with ghe govt failing to stop 10s of millions of hispanics from illegally crossing our border or arent thrilled about black violene balack underachievent and the new left wing imposed Programs of elevating blacks and hispanics iver whites and forcing white to accept homosexual propagana. The left wing is attacking half of america over thought crime, not action, and tgat is wrong so glad trump is fighting the media and academucs on this radical program

The left wing is attacking half of america over thought crime, not action, and tgat is wrong so glad trump is fighting the media and academucs on this radical program What a pile of BS, lol. Don't you ever feel shame writing this kind of drivel? Let's just consider: "Why on earth would the gop criticize trump for a few shootings" - Not for the shootings, for crying out loud! But for the climate of anger and confrontation he has pushed from the start as his "brand", one that incites some and demeans others. "(especially when one was committed by a warren supporter/communist)" - The dead don't care about the politics of the killer, nor do their survivors. Trump should be leading in getting military weapons off the street, but he's done diddly. "Trump is just trying as hard as he can to defend our border. " - Defending the border from asylum-seekers and potential migrants does not require politicizing the military, caging people, or taking children away from their parents. "It is the left which has taken the position to fight him every step of tge way," - Because millions of us don't believe that casual cruelty to others is American. When he makes reasonable proposals, he gets support (see recent congressional budget bill). "Even when trump is just trying to execute the law." - LOL, he's been violating the law left and right, so that even GOP-appointed federal judges have had to stop him. He has said that "Article II says I can do whatever I want." Pay attention! "Its the left that spews hate 99% of the day, calling half of americans racist just cuz they arent happy with ghe govt failing to stop 10s of millions of hispanics from illegally crossing our border or arent thrilled about black violene balack underachievent and the new left wing imposed Programs of elevating blacks and hispanics iver whites and forcing white to accept homosexual propagana. The left wing is attacking half of america over thought crime, not action, and tgat is wrong so glad trump is fighting the media and academucs on this radical program" - And there you go with a racist rant, tossing in some homophobia for good measure, lol! Thanks for making the case.

Trump did not start family separations (such separations are done to us citizens wnen they are arrested too), nor did he cage kuds. Those are cheap left eing talking points. U should be smarter thsn thst. Trump is slso right on trying to prevent millions of adylum seekers whose claums have no merit as everyone kniws. Dems ideas like giving free legal counsel to asylum seekers will just allow allow dems to council seekers on how to lie to get in, with the aim to further dilute white votes.

Dems ideas like giving free legal counsel to asylum seekers will just allow allow dems to council seekers on how to lie to get in, with the aim to further dilute white votes. No caged children? Wow! As for the family separation policy: "The Obama Administration dealt with a major surge in migrants and primarily detained families together in administrative facilities or released them, according to the Migration Policy Institute...President Donald Trump continues to falsely blame Democrats for an administration policy that has led to more than 2,000 children being separated from their parents at the U.S. border...The family separations began earlier this year after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a new 'zero tolerance' policy of referring all border crossings for federal criminal prosecution, which leads to children being separated as their parents are sent to jail...From April 19 to May 31, [2018] some 1,995 children were separated from roughly as many adults at the U.S. border, officials announced on Friday...The Trump Administration has sent mixed messages about the policy. While Trump has repeatedly — and falsely — blamed Democrats for the policy, other staffers have either denied there is a policy or argued that it is a positive...White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller defended the policy, arguing that it shows that no one is above the law...At the same time, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen tweeted on Sunday that there was no family separation policy...But on Monday, Nielsen defended the policy while speaking before the National Sheriffs’ Association and suggested that people were 'fraudulently' using children in order to pose as families and cross the border." link At this time there are some 200 children in the US whose parents were deported without any way to reunite them; some are being adopted. Imagine one of your own children simply disappearing. The vast majority of asylum-seekers have at least a legitimate case to make before an immigration judge. Most are from Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, where they are faced with armed bands of criminals who forcibly recruit their sons, and often make sex slaves of their daughters. People inside the Administration know this very well. But instead of helping to improve conditions in those countries so that people don't feel forced to migrate (most really would prefer to stay at home with their extended families and friends), this Administration has all but eliminated foreign aid for them, including assistance aimed at improving law enforcement and public safety. This is a self-defeating strategy, but very much part of Trump's political "branding" as a "tough guy" and white nationalist. Get your facts straight sometime, please.

Many US schools have dences around them, so do believe US kuds go to school in cages lol ol sport. That is bizarre. My school had a chain-link fence, too. But you know what? It surrounded a huge playground, and you could walk out the gate to go home. Those cages look nothing at all like a playground fence. Quit lying to yourself, or at least stop doing it in public where we can laugh at you.
