Badger football is just around the corner and I am sure all that read & post here are bummed about the loss of Jack Cichy.
The ILB spot was probably the one where we could most afford an injury, but I wonder about how much his leadership skills will be missed on the field diagnosing plays.
This would have been different four days ago, but I say 9 - 3 with losses at BYU, Neb and MN.
We still get to the BT Championship Game where we hang with the Buckeyes for longer than the experts think and lose a close one.
Off to sunny Florida for the Citrus or Outback Bowl.

I think 9-3 is an underestimate. This likely is the best prospect we've had for an undefeated regular season in a very long time. And I would not be surprised if it happened, though 10-2 is more likely, given the difficulty of pulling it off. The toughest games appear to be BYU, Northwestern, Nebraska, Iowa, and Michigan, but Maryland and Minnesota won't be pushovers. In the end I see another trip to Indianapolis in December, and a date with one of the CFP-6 bowl games around New Year's Day. Are you aware the UW-ND series at Lambeau and Soldier Fields will be announced at a press conference around 12:30 ET? Looks like 2020 in GB and 2021 in Chicago.

Whew... Finally some football - something outside of politics where we do not have to attack each other like the feral cats in my neighborhood! I do agree with you that this is the best shot for an undefeated season since Russell was here, but even that season showed how tough it is to accomplish... I worry about BYU, NW, NB, IN, IA, MI and MN games. Given that the team is quite good I took three that worry me a little more than the others... - BYU - first road test & altitude - Spent lots of time in the west when civil & criminal training for the feds & I really noticed the air change.
- NB - atmosphere with a likely night game & recruiting - I know we outperform our recruits but they have well-outperformed us for 4-star kids.
- MN - PJ Fleck & time - PJ concerns me in Gopherland because this might be their bowl game and this streak is getting way too long for the axe.
The best thing about football talk is that superstitions are as legitimate as statistics. You know any team could, on any given Saturday, upset a better team. I hope you are correct & yes I saw the WI/ND game on Badgernation. I am not banned there (only the cool kid's board ) but the new design makes it harder to login. >O

I banned myself from the cool kids' board, lol! And I was one of the original members. I stay permanently logged in to BadgerNation, so haven't noticed any problems, at least of that kind. I do think that Fleck just might be successful at UMN, though I had thought that the era of B1G programs hiring MAC HCs was over after the Beckman/Hazell fiascos of recent years. But I guess UMN was happy enough that Kill got them back to Mason-ish levels of success so decided to go back to that well again (it's cheaper). After watching how the WMU kids played in the Cotton Bowl I can see why that wasn't such a bad move. In four years the guy took his program from 1-11 to 13-1. You can't argue about that. He may be an annoying little Energizer bunny, but that has gotten their program some attention. As far as winning the Axe game, however, the odds on winning in any given year are statistically independent of how many consecutive games one team has won. The Law of Large Numbers says that at some point we will lose, but it doesn't mean it's more likely this year than any other.

How funny - I thought you went back? I too was a lurker (not a poster) going way, way back. Same way with the old Badgermaniac. I bet we know lots of the same people - though not many know me as the totally evil constitutional conservative demon creature called buckybasser. On to important things like college football... As a UIUC graduate I fully understand the damage a MAC coach can inflict, but Fleck seems to inspire young kids whereas Beckman fed them lasagna & dipped tobacco on the sidelines. I am very superstitious for a conservative - perhaps displayed by my fascination with mythical creatures & monster movies. The other part of my Gopher fears stem from listening to the 1993 MN/WI game on the radio in my Madison studio apartment - my first year. An absolute nightmare it was - our only loss in such a magical season. >O

How funny - I thought you went back? I too was a lurker (not a poster) going way, way back. Same way with the old Badgermaniac. Several people begged me to do it during the campaign last fall, so with some reluctance I did. It was a mistake, one I corrected earlier this year. I was one of the original Badgermaniac members around 20 years ago, and before that was on the listserv from which the first members came. As a UIUC graduate Have we discussed this before? I turn 72 next week, so may have forgotten. You do know I graduated from there, too, right?I fully understand the damage a MAC coach can inflict, but Fleck seems to inspire young kids whereas Beckman fed them lasagna & dipped tobacco on the sidelines. Yeah, I think Fleck showed a lot at WMU, more than Beckman or Hazell had done before they moved up. Still, it's a lot more complex to run a successful B1G program than one in the MAC, so he's still got to prove himself. I am very superstitious for a conservative Ok, I'm not at all superstitious, lol.

Yes - we have talked about our similar UIUC / WI paths. I am getting old too - got 50 coming in a few years! I have not been to Champaign for about 10 years - when my high school's football team & nephew were there for a state title game - they lost. I get to Madison much more often to fish, but I need to walk the campus again sometime soon. >O

I assume you gentlemen watched the game on Friday?
I don't recall a more dramatic difference between halves than that - holy moly!
Always dangerous to extrapolate too much about any team after first game. So I will do it....
- seems safe to say J. Taylor, fr RB is a major talent. Made me immediately think of Dayne on his TD run when he ran into his OL and then redirected. This guy will be fun to watch develop. I assume the Big 1G season will see some more exotic plays designed to get him the ball. He'll have to show he can catch it when the bullets are flying.
- I fully admit to not being a good observer of O line play. Not sure how that changed between halves other than the USU defense may have begun to experience the downside (exhaustion) of being a hurry up offense team.
- makes me happy to see Gaglianone out there splitting the uprights again!
Not an auspicious first game for BYU last night. I still share BB's wariness about playing there and wonder if it will manifest as another slow start for UW.

Yes GB - the largest difference I have seen a Badger team change within a game...
Only Bert's Michigan Meltdown comes to mind, but I think you could see evidence of that coming well before the 2nd half.
I have watched some of BYU 2x now...
I think we are much more talented as a team, but I still think the first road trip, altitude and attitude will be a big factor.
On the altitude, I spent many weeks in civil & criminal training in Boulder when working for Uncle Sam.
I am no athlete - but even I noticed being short of breath much sooner during morning runs versus the Midwest - most of it went away after a few days.
Hope I am wrong to be worried about BYU.

Actually, I was flying over the Arctic Ocean during the game, but did watch it on YouTube Monday night. I really wouldn't be too worried about the ostensible slow start; it was no worse than OSU's against IU or any numer of other games, and was typical for a first game of the season. The turnaround actually began in the second quarter, at around the 10 minute mark, and was less dramatic than the one at Ohio State in 1999, when the Badgers were down 0-17, on the road, with a RS FR QB with 10 minutes left in the first half, and wound up winning 42-17. Yeah fewer points, but it was against Ohio State, not Utah State, and in Columbus, not Madison.
Taylor looks special already. He almost certainly will be the starter at some point this season. And he follows in a line of NJ RBs from Dayne to Davis to Clement. We once more have a good RB troika, and the OL to make them exceptional. Gonna be a fun year.
Hornibrook played well, and made some really nice throws. I was glad to see Coan get a little playing time at the end, but wish he'd had an opportunity to throw (in this case, that would have seemed like RUTS).

Another week, another win - I'll take it.
Good for Taylor (and UW) to get some time as the feature back. I just can't believe that guy is a freshman - what a player. Nice tag team with James - James Taylor at running back?!
With that said, I am less confident about BYU than I was last beginning of the season. I still expect a win, mind you, but Badgers look a little shakier than I hoped. Game plan still looks totally vanilla on both sides though.
Coan with a nice pass at the end this week!

Coan with a nice pass at the end this week! It would not be shocking if Coan won the starting job before season's end. Not predicting that it will happen, but wouldn't be shocked. Why doesn't every top RB in NJ just head to Madison? I mean: Dayne, Davis, Clement, Taylor. How can they resist? Taylor is really a marvel for a true frosh.

Well if that wasn't by far the best the Badgers have looked this season!
Like BB, I was worried about the X factor of the first away game, altitude, etc. and happy they overcame it.
Horni cleaned up his errors from last week very nicely and, for a change, looks like his receivers bailed him out at times when his passes weren't perfect. Coan with some late game handoff duty.
Taylor just a pleasure to watch. Still leaves some yards on the field with rookie oversights but appears to correct them. Looks to be quite a student - you can often see him make better choices or adjustments after an error.
Saw a little of Michigan-Air Force game. Michigan has some receiver talent and good D but I think Badgers are the better team right now. I hope both teams are at full power when they meet in November!
Bring on the B1G season!!!

Yes - AH was throwing strikes and it is hard to find any other aspect of the team's performance to criticize. I liked seeing A.J. Taylor involved because he had some bad drops in the prior two games - could a be great player in years to come. Davis has great ball skills. Want to see Jazz get the ball in his hands - sweeps or whatever... Love JT - I have watched many of his NJ track races on film over the years. I wanted to see more of Chris James. I think Shaw was likely still not 100%. On come the Northwestern Wildcats - my sweet mother's Alma Mater... She roots Badgers every week except the upcoming one... >O

So, I finally got to watch the game today, having returned from Manila. Most compete Badger game in a while--absolute fun to watch. Hornibrook named B1G Offensive Player of the Week, following Taylor's award last week. Nice!
Thanks to BTN.com, I was able to see the FAU game live halfway around the world!

I know better than to look past Iowa but I am now wondering if Michigan will be looking past Wisconsin to “the game” with OSU now?

I know better than to look past Iowa but I am now wondering if Michigan will be looking past Wisconsin to “the game” with OSU now? I don't think they should be looking past anyone at this point, lol. Seriously, their losses were not from lack of motivation; they just didn't play as well as the other guys.

Not being Debbie Downer - I am happy as a clam to be 7-0!
When we turn the ball over and have loads of both pre & post-snap penalties, those things can allow teams we might clearly 'out-talent' to remain in the game.
If we have a bunch of penalties & turnovers in Bloomington, for example, the Hoosiers have shown they can hang around with "better" teams.
The Illini probably just don't have the horses to beat us - even on a really sloppy Badger day.
What has become of our poor Illini Professor? BTW - we did pick up a sweet 5* point guard out of Morgan Park this past week!

Hit “create post” a little early as Mrs GB was calling 😀
My larger point is that expectations in Ann Arbor are always high, they’re almost certainly out of the conference championship game, and I suspect the opportunity to beat THE Ohio State University will be seen as the last chance to salvage the season by many.
If they lose to UW, this excuse will be at the ready. As always, I hope our boys unload on meatchicken...
I am with Basser here about Indiana (who took Michigan to OT) as a team not to be taken lightly. Should win but could lose if UW keeps taking shots at their own feet.

I agree with both of you that IU is potentially a very dangerous team; they're record doesn't reflect how competitive they've been.
